Photography has always been an important part of John Crook's life, complementing his work as medieval specialist, architectural historian, and archaeologist, and he is also a widely published professional photographer in his specialist field of art and architecture, topography, and history. His photographs have appeared in many books, magazines, and journals (including regular appearances in Country Life, This England, Church Building and numerous other titles), as well as featuring on CD covers and as television rostrum shots. He has collaborated with fellow cathedral archaeologist Tim Tatton-Brown in three acclaimed books: The English Cathedral (New Holland Publishers, 2002), The English Church : England's 100 Finest Parish Churches (New Holland Publishers, 2005), Abbeys and Priories of England (New Holland Publishers, 2006), and Salisbury Cathedral (Scala, 2010).
